Fisher Brothers launches internship program for first gen’ students of color

by

Basta, an organization that connects first-generation college students of color with career-building opportunities, today announced a partnership with Fisher Brothers, a leading New York City-based real estate firm.

Through this partnership, Basta worked with Fisher Brothers to develop an internship program that will allow students to learn about careers in real estate and overcome challenges to accessing opportunities within the industry.

Basta, based in New York City, has worked with close to 600 college students and recent graduates over the past five years to connect fellows with opportunities for quality employment and higher earning potential throughout their careers. First-generation and low-income students of color face systemic barriers to accessing career opportunities after graduation, including lack of access to a professional network. Basta aims to combat this by leveraging social capital provided by their network of partners and volunteers and provide career navigation content to fellows allowing them to more effectively pursue career-pathway jobs.

“Basta’s partnership with Fisher Brothers truly exemplifies our organization’s mission – to provide access to networks and career opportunities that are often unattainable to first generation college students,” said Sheila Sarem, Founder of Basta.

“This is the first time Basta has worked with an employer to design and deliver an internship program specifically for Basta students, and the team at Fisher Brothers have been wonderful partners in our goal to close the employment gap by offering access to opportunities in the real estate world. “

This fall, four Basta fellows will join the Fisher Brothers
team across the company’s departments and business verticals. Basta worked with
Fisher Brothers to determine areas of the company where fellows will thrive and
learn the particulars of real estate development, lending, hospitality, and
commercial leasing. Basta’s engagement with Fisher Brothers is the
organization’s first partnership with a commercial real estate company.

“As a fourth-generation family-owned business in one of the least diverse industries, Fisher Brothers recognizes our responsibility to provide opportunity to the talented and ambitious students Basta works with,” said Winston Fisher, Partner at Fisher Brothers.

“Creating professional development opportunities for underserved students is critical to building a strong, diverse talent pipeline and to disrupt the status quo within the industry. We are proud to partner with Basta and assist in their goal of creating equitable access to career opportunities.”

Since the beginning of its engagement with Basta, Fisher Brothers has held a fireside chat with Fisher Brothers staff and leadership to educate students about the real estate industry and held a panel discussion that provided an overview of the various career opportunities within the industry.

The internship program, which will run from September 13, 2021, through the end of the year, will create critical relationship and network building opportunities, career-building experience, and exposure to the real estate industry.
